“Whatever you proclaim as your identity here in the material realm is also your drag. You are not your religion. You are not your skin color. You are not your gender, your politics, your career, or your marital status. You are none of the superficial things that this world deems important. The real you is the energy force that created the entire universe!” - RuPaul
I was first introduced to drag queen culture when I began watching RuPaul’s Drag Race. I found myself mesmerized by these statuesque beauties because they were larger than life. While these elegant, sequin embellished, fake-eyelash and wig wearing hairography experts might not seem “punk” at first glance, they are some of the most badass superhumans you will ever see. They widen the closed-minds of today’s society while bashing gender norms with every eye-catching look they create. Their resilience and fearless individuality inspire millions to accept/understand their sexuality, feel more comfortable in their own skin, and challenge beauty standards in their daily lives. Drag culture is a culture of art, heavily D.I.Y in nature, with a prominent punk influence that has made this world just a little more gorgeous.
Here are some of my favorite punk drag queen icons and Genderbending movies,
hope you enjoy!
