Girls Like Girls, Boys Do Cry, Get Over It!

When trying to compile a list of LGBTQA+ punk bands/artists and movies, I realised how few I actually knew of. The exposure and recognition of these creators is so unfair, they put so much work into their craft, yet hardly anyone knows they exist. With queer icons like RuPaul and Tegan + Sara making it to the mainstream, it’s so unfortunate that more aren’t being recognized for their talents.

Representation is SO important, not just for underrepresented sexualities and gender identities, but also for people of color and those with disabilities. We all deserve to feel that glorious, “Hallelujah” feeling when we see someone who we can relate to in the media, whether that be in music, movies, and/or TV. When I was in the process of coming out, listening to artists like Tori Amos and Tracy Chapman really helped me feel confident and their words helped reassure me that my sexuality was valid and more importantly, normal.

When you get trapped in your head and the majority of what you see in the media are these repetitive, heteronormative storylines...again and again and again...it can sort of make you feel like there’s something wrong with you. A society that represents the LGBTQA+ community in their media will help those struggling to feel normal and accepted in the long run. Luckily, I have begun to feel comfortable in my own skin, even excited, to live my life the way I want. Unashamed. Optimistic. Unapologetic. For all of you out there questioning your sexuality or looking for some recommendations, this list is for you :)

Here are some of my favorite songs and movies made or featuring storylines by the LGBTQA+ community…

Hope you enjoy!

XOXO
